Abstract

Theft of nectar by a solitary wasp is reported for the first time: ♂♂ as well as ♀♀ of Pterocheilus phaleratus Panzer 1797 were observed near Kiel in Northwest Germany while stealing nectar from flowers of Lotus corniculatus Linné 1753. Unlike other members of the insect order Hymenoptera, which use holes made by themselves or by other insects, P. phaleratus utilizes existing openings, found in the natural structure of the host flowers, to gain access to the nectar.
