Abstract

A brief overview on the history of systematics of the order Gigartinales (Rhodophyta) is provided. The changes in the taxonomy of algae of this order from the Far Eastern seas of Russia based on the molecular phylogenetic data are analyzed. Taxonomic problems that can only be resolved by modern methods are discussed.
