Abstract

Photography is expanding beyond the realm of conventional film systems. Today, images can be captured on electronic image sensors. Images can be written to displays, to thermal dye transfer printers, or to conventional photographic paper. Film can be electronically scanned and then manipulated in a similar manner. There are significant differences in the cost, image quality and accessibility of these systems. The subject of this paper is to compare the photographic performance of electronic still cameras with that of film.
