ABSTRACT

Banana belongs to the family Musaeceae and is a widely consumed fruit all over the world. Banana is getting popularized among the populations because its nutraceutical and pharmacological values are quite high. Each part of a banana, whether flower, pseudostem, fruit, or peel, contains a good amount of bioactive constituents which are considered to be effective in the prevention and treatment of many health-related problems like diarrhea, constipation, inflammation, etc., and also possess antioxidants, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative properties. Banana by-products can also be used as natural bio-colorant, flavoring agents, stabilizers, gelling agents, preservatives in food processing industry minimizing the use of synthetic or chemical-based additives, thus providing the consumer with natural and safe food products. There is a large potential for banana to be used as a functional food because of bio constituents present in the fruit.
