Abstract

ABSTRACT:

Persona theory presents tools that are essential for the modern critical study of Latin poetry. After a brief review of scholarship on this topic as it relates especially to Catullus, this article presents an in-class activity designed to introduce students to the concept of the literary persona and persona theory through modern popular music. It also outlines how this project fit into a course on Latin love poetry structured around the hypothesis that Roman poetry has more in common with traditions of pop music than with the view of poetry that modern students often bring to college.
