ABSTRACT:
Clearchus, On Riddles fr. 93 Wehrli preserves two doctor jokes based on ambiguity, similar in many respects to the jokes in the Philogelos, the only jokebook that comes down from antiquity. The jokes are identified as γρῖφοι ("riddles") in the fragment. This paper argues that a) these jokes were part of the repertoire of entertainers at symposia and are in fact the only preserved instances of their kind in ancient literature, and b) the fragment is evidence that γρῖφος, one of the main terms for "riddle," was also used with reference to jokes based on ambiguity.
