Abstract:
Describes fire tests in which the increased risk of explosive spalling of concrete densified by silica fume was first discovered. Further results are discussed from tests to define appropriate limits of silica fume content and to develop a new concrete for slender column units. Observations are made about circumstances under which superplasticizing additives in concrete gave rise to the development of toxic gases.
