Allergen damages the neutrophils of the oral mucosa in patients with atopic bronchial asthma

Objective: to assess the effect of oral-buccal provocative test with the allergen on the oral mucosa by measuring the percentage of increase in the level of peroxidase activity and the viability of neutrophils in the oral fluid.
Materials and methods: 22 patients with atopic bronchial asthma and 16 healthy volunteers of the control group were examined. The level of peroxidase activity of the oral fluid was determined before and after the oral-buccal provocative test with the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus mite allergen and the cytotoxic effect of the allergen on the viability of the neutrophils in the oral fluid.
Results and conclusions: a significant decrease in the percentage of viable neutrophils in the oral fluid of patients with atopic bronchial asthma after an oral-buccal provocative test with allergens of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus mite was observed, accompanied by a simultaneous increase in the level of peroxidase activity in the oral fluid, which indicates the involvement of neutrophils in the realization of allergic inflammation in atopic bronchial asthma.
