The aim of our work was to determine the indicators of NBT and candida killing neutrophils in preterm newborns with pneumonia. Material and methods. We examined 36 newborns with neonatal pneumonia (12 children with congenital pneumonia and 24 newborns with respiratory distress syndrome complicated by pneumonia), 15 premature infants without respiratory tract pathology. Results. In the group with an unfavorable outcome of pneumonia, the level of NBT-positive neutrophils was initially increased in spontaneous conditions. However, its level was reduced after stimulation with prodigiosan, which indicated that the activation reserve was insufficient. A positive correlation between the severity of pneumonia and a decrease of candida killing neutrophils was found by the 10-12th days of life in patients with an unfavorable outcome of pneumonia (r = 0.48, p
