이 연구는 이승만의 저서 Japan Inside Out에 담긴 국제정치사를 그의 신문 스크랩을 통해 분석하고 그 연관성을 규명한다. 일본 군국주주의 실체를 폭로하고 미일전쟁을 예견한 Japan inside Out은 발간 4개월 후 진주만 공습이 자행되자 미국 조야의 큰 주목을 받았다. 이승만은 중일전쟁 발발 직후 하와이와 워싱턴 D.C.에서 신문을 수집하고 스크랩북을 제작했는데 그것이 Japan Inside Out의 핵심자료가 되었다. 이승만은 신문을 통해 중일전쟁의 현지 전황(戰況)과 언론의 설전(舌戰), 미국 정계 및 사회의 지적 논쟁 등 국제정치사적 쟁점들을 효과적으로 파악하여 저서 집필에 적극적으로 활용했다. 이승만은 일본의 전쟁심리를 다룬 윌라드 프라이스의 논설, 일본의 선전성 보도에 맞선 미국언론 특파원들의 폭로성 기사, 미국 사회의 배일(排日)·참전(參戰)의 흐름을 보여주던 기사 등을 탐독하여 자신의 미일전쟁 필연론을 강화하는 근거로 삼았다. Japan Inside Out은 신문 스크랩에 수록된 기사의 작성자들의 국제정세인식과, 미일전쟁을 앞두고 미국 내에서 벌어진 지적인 논쟁을 반영한 기사들이 이승만에게 독해되어서 탄생한 것이었다.

This study analyzes the international history of Japan Inside Out through Syngman Rhee’s press clippings, and investigates the relationship between them. Japan Inside Out exposed the reality of Japanese militarism and predicted the Pacific War. It attracted great attention from society in the United States when the Pearl Harbor attack was carried out just four months after its publication. Rhee collected newspapers and produced scrapbooks in Hawaii and Washington D.C. immediately after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War. These became the core content of Japan Inside Out. Rhee effectively grasped the local situation of the Sino-Japanese War and the intellectual debates of the United States government and society through the newspapers, and quoted them in his work. Rhee read Willard Price’s editorial on Japanese war psychology, U.S. correspondent reports against Japanese propaganda reports, and articles on the flow of anti-Japanese and pro-war sentiment in American society and used them as the basis for strengthening his theory of the inevitability of the Pacific War. Japan Inside Out was created by Rhee"s reading of articles reflecting the perceptions of the newspaper writers on international situation and the intellectual debates that were taking place in the United States ahead of the Pacific War.
