The interaction between the VO²⁺ cation and a number of nucleotides has been investigated by means of ³¹P NMR and IR measurements in solutions. The results support and extend previous conclusions obtained from electronic spectra and confirm the central role of the phosphate groups of the nucleotides in this process. Preliminary results obtained from IR spectra of some solid vanadyl/nucleotide compounds suggest a greater complexity of the metal-to ligand interaction in the solid state.
