왕정복고 이후 영국음악에 나타난 가장 큰 변화중 하나는 ‘소나타’로 불리 우는 이탈리아에서 들어온 새로운 기악음악 장르의 등장이다. 이후로 소나타는 영국의 전통적인 기악 실내악장르들을 밀어내고 가장 주요한 실내악 장르로서 위치를 차지하게 되었다. 영국에서의 소나타의 정착은 점진적으로 이루어졌으나, 그 과정에서 가장 중요한 작곡가가 소개되었는데 그가 바로 아르칸젤로 코렐리(Archangelo Corelli, 1653-1713)이다. 코렐리의 소나타들은 일단 영국에서 유통되기 시작하자 엄청나게 영향력 있는 곡들이 되었으며 이내 영국 내 다른 모든 소나타들의 인기를 넘어섰다. 이러한 코렐리 음악의 인기는 어느 유럽 국가들에서보다 영국에서 가장 오래 지속되었다.
이 논문의 목적은 코렐리 음악이 17세기 후반의 영국에서 처음 어떤 경로를 통하여 전파되었으며 어떻게 광범위하게 영국 내에서 순환되고 인기를 얻게 되었는지, 또한 당시 영국에서 활동하던 작곡가들의 작품에 어떻게 직접적으로 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴봄으로써 18세기 초반 영국에 나타난 코렐리 음악의 인기와 영향력에 대한 배경을 이해해보고자 한다. 따라서 이 논문의 첫 번째 부분은 처음 코렐리 음악이 영국으로 도입되는 과정을 5가지 정도로 나누어 살펴봄으로서 그의 음악이 영국으로 소개되어 확산되는 경로에 대해서 알아볼 것이다. 나머지 부분은 영국음악에 미친 코렐리 소나타의 영향력이 어떠하였는지를 당시 활약하던 영국 작곡가들의 소나타들에 나타난 코렐리적인 특징들을 통해 살펴볼 것이다.

Among those changes made in English music at that time was the introduction of a new instrumental genre from Italy called ‘sonata.’ The absorption of the sonata in England was a gradual one but it eventually came to occupy a prominent position and gained immense popularity. Furthermore when at the turn of the century the prints of Corelli’s music arrived, it almost swept away any kind of English instrumental music. The popularity of Corelli’s music lasted longer in England than anywhere else in Europe and brought wide and strong influences on English sonata composers of that time. The main aim of this paper is to understand how Corelli’s music was introduced and circulated widely among English music lovers and how strong Corelli’s influence was on English sonata composers. The first part considers the five main ways for Corelli’s music to be spread in an attempt to access the dissemination in English musical circle. The remainder of this paper deals with sonatas by English composers to explore in what ways they are influenced by Corelli.
