The environmental education movement began as an environmental movement and combined itself with environmental education. As a result, it embraces the ambivalent, integrative and transcendental nature of both fields on one hand, and the tensions that exist between them on the other hand. This study aims to uncover the unique identity of the environmental education movement through methods of theoretical discussion, literature review and oral history study. Environmental education movements in Korea first formed their unique identity in 1990s and since 2000 have expanded and diversified their domain. Through this process of change, the identity of the environmental movement has diverged generally into three patterns. First, the environmental education movement is considered both as environmental education and as an environmental movement, and pursues the unification of education and a movement. As such, the environmental education movement enthusiastically pursues environmental education for social change. Second, the environmental education movement is one means of conducting an environmental movement. The environmental education movement has been chosen as an effective strategy for conducting an environmental movement. Finally, the environmental education movement is not limited to the domain of environmental movements and environmental education but extends itself to education movements which make changes to life itself.
