This article studies the historical context of curent 'Korean Wave' phenomenon. Contemplating the process of Korean mas culture industry from its daunting period, this article tries to analyze influences of 'foreign' cultural industry in the history of Korea's mas culture industry. And folowing short analysis on the 'Korean Wave' discourses is based on this historical context. Korean mass culture had started with the strong influence of Japanese and Western mass culture. It was, therefore, not an exceptional case in the general process of modernization for the Third World countries. Because, as wel known, their modernization process was more or less directed in each country's 'colonialized' condition. In other words, it was a kind of unilateral communication where the dominant cultural power of the World System had a quasi-absolute influence on the weaker part. As the Chinese culture had been highly significant during Korea's middle age, the influence of Western and Japanese mass culture has been also considerable since the beginning of Korea's mass culture industry. Recent success for some part of Korean mass culture products -- known as 'Korean Wave' ('Hallyou' for Korean pronunciation) -- would be probably the first meaningful export of Korean mas culture industry. As the consequence, we can understand the enthusiasm of a part of discourses concerning this success. This discourse of enthusiasm for the 'Korean Wave' can be even more significant when we consider actual context of globalization and aspects of post-modern period. Maybe this Korean case is not exceptional. Competition for the hegemony of cultural industry, and re-territorialization of identity with that, can be a part of understandable reactions from each region, before the strong tendency of today's cultural globalization.
