The grammatical relationship between English double object construction and dative construction has received much attention among many linguists in the generative syntax for decades. Many researchers have tried to examine whether or not there is a rule that relates two constructions. In this paper, I challenge the transformational view of the Korean dative alternation, in which double object construction can be allowed when the light verb cwu-is affixed to dative verb. I analyze the grammatical relationship between Korean dative construction and double objects on the basis of Larsonian VP-Shell approach and Chomsky's light verb(v). It is well explained that there is an asymmetry between the goal dative construction and the benefactive dative construction if there is the light verb cwu base-generated on v in Korean. Through this cross-linguistic data, I expand the new approach to dative construction and double object construction.
