Abstract

In educating learners with special needs the importance of making provisions culturally appropriate and relevant is often overlooked. This paper describes a strategy teachers can use to ensure that this does not happen in their schools. The cultural self-review was developed and trialled in a six year PhD study. Its purpose is to ensure that the culture of Mäori learners both with and without special needs is taken into consideration in their education. While the cultural self-review was developed specifically for Mäori learners, the process involved is appropriate for learners from other ethnic minority groups although the products used would need to be adapted for different cultural groups.
