Abstract

We have been developing a narrative generation system based on A.I. with functional modules of knowledge bases and narrative techniques for the generation, transformation, and control of narrative structures. The many parts are currently implemented in a synthetic form known as “integrated narrative generation system” (INGS). This paper will introduce narratology into the system as a form literary knowledge. In particular, the following theories will be described based on their original interpretations and formalizations: a folktale theory by Vladimir Propp will give a function for making macro-story structures in the narrative techniques; a narrative discourse theory by Gerard Genette as designed for transforming a given temporal story structure into narrative discourse structures; and a reception theory by Hans Robert Jauss will be formalized as an attempt toward controlling the structural generation. The preliminary evaluation based on each of the mechanisms will also be provided to show the effectiveness and possibility of our “expanded literary theory” as developed through the means of the listed theories. This paper will reflect a theoretical and practical framework for integrating narratology and literary theories into informatics and narrative generation systems.
