This study uncovers the contemporary elements of Korean traditional performing art space design by redisc overing its value and meaning. Through this, the contem porary utilization of the traditional performing art space suggests a fresh idea of the space concept, which leads to more diverse, newer styles of contemporary performin g arts. This study begins with finding the alternative solution s for the absence of traditional theater buildings in the hi story of Korean theater. In traditional Korean performing art, there was no physically established theater architectu re, but its space concept can be modified, and expanded. The deep understanding of space and various oriental phi losophies contributed to creating the traditional Korean p erforming art spaces, and is connected to recent searches for different styles of performing art and design spaces. Therefore, this study organizes and presents the princip les and concepts of traditional Korean art space design by referring to documented national ceremonies, rituals (‘Koryesa’ etc ) and looks at how the fundamentals of the traditional Korean performing art design correspond to performing aesthetics and space concept perused by conte mporary performing art . Thus, this work connects the traditional performing space’s oriental philosophical value and space concepts with recent social and cultural move ments of rediscovering the past and its traditional value, and searches for contemporary utilization in order to ans wer the demand for new perspectives for performing spa ce and styles. To conclude; this study suggests branding for the tradit ional performing art space design through recognizing th e value of traditional Korean performing art space and pr esenting it as a contemporary utilizable trend in stage de sign.
