An electrolytic cell was devised to differentiate the sources of the overpotential encountered in Pt-oxygen electrode reactions in the molten Na₂O–B₂O₃ system. The result shows that the overpotential due to a concentration gradient of Na₂O is negligible at steady state conditions at 865°C.
