한국 보수기독교와 정치의 관계는 중요한 연구주제임에도 불구하고, 그동안 보수기독교 내에서는 비평적 연구가 거의 없었고, 주로 진보적인 그룹으로부터만 혹독한 비판이 있었다. 특히 진보 진영에서는 보수기독교가 줄곧 권력에 유착되었다고 평가하거나, 또는 과거에 정교분리를 주장하던 입장을 철회하고 현재 활발히 정치에 참여한다고 비판해 왔다. 이러한 비판에 대응하여, 이 소고는 정교유착이나 정교분리라는 용어를 지양하고, 1960-70년대를 특정하여 한국 보수기독교가 어떤 방식으로 정치에 참여했는지 냉철하면서도 공정한 평가를 시도하고자 한다. 그렇게 함으로써 “한국 보수기독교가 교회 이익을 위해 정치와 유착 관계에 있었다”는 주장이 다소 경도되었음을 증명하고, “정교분리를 주장하던 보수기독교가 정치참여 노선으로 선회했다”는 주장도 그 한계를 노정한다는 사실을 증명하고자 한다. 이를 위해, 본고는 가장 먼저 ‘정교유착’과 ‘정교분리’, ‘정치참여’ 등의 용어를 재정의하는 것으로 시작하여, 제3절에서는 1960-70년대에 한국교회가 각종 정치적인 이슈에 어떻게 반응했는지 살펴보고, 제4절에서는 보수기독교가 그렇게 반응했던 배경과 원인이 무엇인지 고찰한다. 이 모든 논의를 통해 본고가 주장하는 바는 “한국 보수기독교가 반공주의 망령에만 천착했거나 생존과 번영을 위해 정부와 유착했던 집단이 아니라, 교회가 추구하는 신앙과 가치를 위협하는 각 시대의 도전에 항전하거나 신앙적 가치 추구에 필요한 정치적 입장을 취했으며, 그와 동시에 안타깝게도 일정한 가치만을 지나치게 강조한 채 또 다른 소중한 가치들을 간과하는 오류를 범했다”는 것이다.

The relationship between Korean conservative Christianity and politics have not been researched much by conservative theologians despite its significance, as a number of radical critics have harshly blamed the political stance of conservative churches. The radical criticism so far is categorized in two large groups; one of which argued for the continuous intimate alliance of the state and the conservative Christianity, and the other group claimed that the political stance of conservative Christianity has changed from the separation from state to the active participation in politics. Responding this tendency of criticism, this article attempts to make a more objective and balanced reassessment of how Korean conservative Christianity has participated in politics, focusing on the era 1960s and 1970s. The purpose of this research is to disclose that it is a somewhat biased claim to assert that Korean conservative Christianity has maintained the intimate relationship with state for its own improper interests, and that it is also implausible to argue that it has changed its political stance from the separation from state to the participation in politics. Starting with redefining the terms ‘alliance of state and church,’ ‘separation of state and church,’ and ‘church’s participation in politics’(chapter 2), it examines how conservative churches have responded to political issues in 1960-70s (chapter 3). The fourth chapter is for figuring out the background and critical reasons of those responses. A tentative conclusion of this research reads “Korean conservative Christianity has not improperly obsessed by anticommunism, nor maintained continuous intimate alliance with state for its own good. Instead, it has made mistakes to sacrifice many other valuable virtues for certain spiritual virtue in each particular time when it resisted the challenges to its faith and religious causes.”
