Multicultural Exposure through English Language Teaching:A Critical Discourse Analysis of an English Language Textbook in Indonesia

Indra Dwi Prasetyo

ABSTRACT:

This ongoing research tries to investigate multicultural values represented in English language teaching (ELT) materials for junior high school level in Indonesia, When English Rings a Bell. To be exact, it will evaluate multicultural values discursively reflected in the textbook and how such values are represented. To do such analysis, a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) will be applied. The analysis consists of three layers of dimension, including textual analysis, discursive analysis and sociocultural analysis. Textual analysis hypothesizes that multicultural values are encapsulated numerously within the textbook. They are written in various ways, such as students’ activity, narrative texts and visual text. At the discursive analysis, it is assumed that such values are portrayed by reflecting multicultural exposure happening within Indonesian society. Further, multiculturalism agenda by the Ministry of Education and the education reform from the government through a new curriculum are the catalyst of such values to exist in the sociocultural analysis level.
