A wind turbine system consists of blades, a main shaft, a gearbox, a power generator, and various controllers. The main shaft, which is positioned inside a nacelle, is a core component for delivering rotational energy directly from the blades to the gearbox or power generator. To produce a reliable product with reduced cost, the main shaft of a 4 MW large-capacity wind turbine was developed in this study using 34CrNiMo6M steel and round steel blooms. Analysis was conducted on heat-treatment process optimization, property evaluation, and forging process design. Forging process analysis was performed for a continuous cast round bloom. The forging process was sequentially performed in the order of upsetting of round bloom, cogging, shape making, and forging of flange parts. First, the upsetting forging of the continuous cast round bloom was conducted; the forging rate was about 46% and die descending speed was set to 50 mm/s. In order to calculate the heat transfer between specimen and die, the specimen temperature was set to the initial forging temperature, 1,250 °C, and the die temperature was set to 400 °C.
