초록

(Background and Purpose)As the boundary between academic fields begins to blur in the modern society of knowledge and information, it has become a time of integration and consilience. Various values co-exist, and integrated thinking is held in high regard. Following this paradigm change, in the field of design, there is a growing need for multidisciplinary design education through convergence of various academic fields. As world-class universities opt for a convergence curriculum, the curricula of design colleges also changes from those focused on a department or major to those focused on convergence. In domestic colleges, on the other hand, there is not enough educational programming or study to produce talented people in the convergence type of design, despite a growing awareness of the importance of convergence-and-fusion design. This research examines the features and types of multidisciplinary design education, based on case studies, to present a direction for developing a design-convergence educational program that is innovative and suitable for a domestic educational environment. (Method)Through theoretical investigation into domestic and overseas studies, this study identified the purposes and driving strategies of government-driven college specialization. The study also researched and analyzed data on cases of multidisciplinary design education by searching for domestic and overseas DB on the Internet, including documents and various previous studies, in order to present a basic direction for developing multidisciplinary design education. (Results)The types of multidisciplinary design education are largely divided into those focused on design and those focused on business. Based on the examination of domestic and overseas cases, this study presents integral design education that uses a conceptual, strategic, and comprehensive approach to the development of multidisciplinary design: thesis-focused education rather than the current focus on design area, project-based education centered on practice rather than on lectures, and international education for exchange and cooperation among nations and cultures. (Conclusions)This study is meaningful in that it presents features and types of multidisciplinary design education as a means of college specialization and provides a direction for developing a curriculum suitable for the domestic education environment, based on studies of advanced domestic and overseas cases of multidisciplinary design education. To establish this multidisciplinary design education, open thought about new areas will provide a basis for exchange among academic fields, industries, and educational fields.
