(Background and Purpose)Yongsan Park, which will be the first national urban park of South Korea, covers an area greater than 2,000,000㎡, which is equivalent to the area of Central Park in New York City and the urban area of Yeouido in Seoul. Yongsan Park is located at the center of Seoul. It plays an important ecological role, connecting Mt. Namsan and the Han River. Therefore, Yongsan Park must differ from existing urban parks in terms of the recovery of hydrologic cycle. (Method)This study developed a detailed strategy for the development of a sustainable hydrologic cycle system for Yongsan Park. This strategy is to be determined by analyzing eight proposals submitted to the international competition for the design of Yongsan Park in April 2012. The study analyzed the proposed designs from the perspective of hydrologic cycle, including items such as water systems, supplying water sources, water purification, rainwater infiltration, reuse of rainwater, and flood prevention. (Results)The result of this study is as follows. First, a comprehensive water system can be developed by connecting water areas such as lakes and ponds, (which are to be newly constructed) and waterways, while ecologically restoring the destroyed and removed wetlands and streams to recover the hydrologic cycle of Yongsan Park. Second, the rainwater and graywater thaviews Yongsan Park from not only the perspective of hydrologic cycle but also from historic, cultural, and ecological perspectives.t are collected in the park, as well as subway effluent from the nearby urban area, can be recycled as a sustainable supply of water sources for lakes, streams, and ponds that are to be newly installed in Yongsan Park. Third, by restoring the drainage system of Yongsan Park as a natural drainage system including natural ditches, vegetation waterways, and dry waterways, as well as using the park’s water areas, vegetation at the waterside, and soil, the water will be purified in ecological and natural ways. Fourth, by installing a rainwater infiltration system and permeable pavement in the paved areas of the park, while establishing green areas (constructed wetlands, bioswales, and rain gardens), the rainwater can infiltrate into the ground, charging the underground water. Fifth, by storing the rainfall runoff generated in the green areas or the rooftops of buildings that are to be installed in Yongsan Park in a rainwater storage facility and existing water tanks, the water can be recycled as the park’s facility water, maintenance water, and irrigation water. Sixth, by restoring wetlands that can save and temporally store large amounts of rainfall runoff generated by torrential rains on Yongsan Park, as well as reservoirs, detention/retention basins, and floodplains, urban flooding can be reduced. (Conclusions)This study may hold ideas for the development of a sustainable and safe Yongsan Park via reduction of urban flooding and flood damage, and securing a water source.
