본 논문은 필름 큐레이팅의 실천 방법에 대해 고찰한다. 필름은 본래 16mm,35mm 등 셀룰로이드로 된 필름 자체를 지칭하는 용어이나, 현대에서는 일반적으로 영화적 문법을 차용하는 움직이는 이미지를 폭넓게 지칭한다. 필름 큐레이팅은 영화, 미술과 미디어의 접점에서 필름 작품의 고유한 역사적 맥락과 미학적가치를 제시하기 위한 제도적 실천이다. 본 논문은 우선 현대예술에서 필름의 영역을 확장한 예술가들의 실천 과정을 검토한다. 그리고 1990년대 이후의 필름 전시와 상영 프로그램들의 분석을 통해 필름 큐레이팅의 실천적인 방법론을 모색한다. 아방가르드 영화와 비디오 아트는 영화가 현대미술의 맥락에서 수용되는 계기가 되었다. 1960년대 이후 필름을 중심으로 한 예술적 실천들은 스크린이라는평면을 넘어서, 관람객에게 건축적 경험을 제공하였다. 고전영화라는 틀을 깨고자끊임없이 탐험한 예술가들의 실천과 같이, 필름 큐레이터는 미술제도 안에서 수용할 수 없었던 필름 작품들의 역사적 맥락을 제시하기 위해서 제도를 새롭게 규정하고 확장할 수 있어야 한다. 그 실천은 공간을 새롭게 재구성하고, 전통적인상영 프로그래밍의 확장을 통해서 전개될 수 있다. 필름 큐레이터는 공간적 실천을 통해 관람객들이 공감각적으로 작품을 재구성할 수 있는 기회를 마련해주어야한다. 또한 전시 공간을 미술관이라는 제도적 공간 밖으로 확장할 수 있는 가능성을 모색해야 한다. 동시에 상영 프로그램을 통해서 관객층을 형성하고 관심을유지할 수 있도록 해야 하고, 개별 필름 작품들과 전시, 상영 공간의 역사적, 장소적 맥락들을 유기적으로 형성할 수 있는 방향을 모색해야 한다.
This paper investigates film curatorial practices. Film is originally aterm to designate the celluloid film stock such as 16mm and 35mm,but generally refers to moving images to appropriate cinematic grammarin nowadays. Film curating is an institutional practice to presentthe historical context and aesthetical value of film works in the interplayamong cinema, art and media. At first, the paper examines thebrief history of artistic practices to expand the field of cinema. In addition,the paper explores the practical methods of film curatingthrough the analysis of film exhibitions and programs since 1990s. The avant-garde film and video art provided an opportunity to acceptthe cinema in the context of contemporary art. The artistic practicesbased on film medium since 1960s provided audiences with architecturalexperiences beyond the flatness of the screen. Similarly with artisticpractices to explore the ways to break down the stereotype ofclassical Hollywood cinema, film curators have to define and expandthe art institutions for presenting the historical context of the filmworks which have been excluded within the art institutions. The curatorialpractices can be unfolded through the spatial reconfiguration andthe expansion of traditional film programming. Film curators have tooffer the audience an opportunity to reorganize the film works synaestheticallythrough the spatial practices. Also, they have to explore thepossibility to expand the space of exhibition beyond the institutionalizedspaces such as the museum and gallery. Furthermore,they have to develop audiences and sustain their concern through filmprograms, and explore a new direction to contextualize each filmwork within the historical and local background of presenting spaces.
