ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on those emotional difficulties which are commonly presented by adolescents. One of the major causes of anxiety is in the area of relationships. During adolescence the changes of puberty render peer relationships more complex. Adolescence is a time of transition as far as phobias are concerned. School phobia will be considered as a separate issue as it is probably for teachers the most common type of problem called a phobia. Unhappiness in adolescence is a common event, as the study by Rutter et al. Successful suicide is very rare among adolescents at school, but when it does occur it achieves national attention. The nature of behaviour problems during adolescence shows differences when compared with both childhood and adult life, but there is evidence for a persistence of problems over time for a minority of youngsters. Adolescence is a time of change, and it is normal for adolescents to have problems.
