ABSTRACT

One of the multifaceted teacher’s roles is to be the scenographer of the teaching space. This means to arrange ‘the stage’ where the dramaturgy of the teaching will evolve. This applies regardless of whether the students are moving around in a traditional classroom or more modern and diverse space. The concept of atmosphere, borrowed from the German philosopher Gernot Böhme, is central to the chapter. The chapter examines what the teacher can do as a scenographer in the classroom, or – better – the teaching room, or – even better – the learning space. This is thus an investigation of what means of creating atmosphere the teacher has at hand, and how they can be used. In the chapter Øfsti also points towards the idea of expanding the learning arena through the use of various outdoor spaces.
