ABSTRACT

To be successful in the academy you must have clearly articulated career goals and plans to achieve those goals. Yet, some mid-career faculty fall short on achieving their goals due to no formal strategy and/or poorly articulated advancement plans. In short, they fail to execute their plans effectively. The aim of this chapter is to provide you with career advancement execution strategies to help you overcome the knowing-doing gap (Pfeffer & Sutton, 1999). A five-step process is offered grounded in literature about the need to redefine work and productivity in the academy, along with a Scenario Planning Strategy Framework to help you clearly articulate and execute your strategy, engage your network of mentors, and monitor your progress.
