ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by identifying some academic language demands of social studies, specifically focusing on dense definitions, descriptions, and explanations; mood choices to connect with the reader; and cohesive devices that create links within the text. It presents a sample unit plan to address these demands and to explore the language of social studies. The chapter then shows applications of LACI in the classroom, exploring the language of social studies with MLs, with examples from a second-grade classroom and a fifth-grade classroom. It concludes with a “Putting into Practice” section to help teachers consider how to apply LACI in social studies teaching and learning.
