ABSTRACT

F or this book, the most important meaning of the word model relates to the way a blueprint works as a plan for something to be built or procedures to be followed. The blueprint provides a detailed set of written

and drawn plans, including instructions, measurements, locations, and materials that help both the architect and the builder understand what the structure will look like when completed, and it allows for efficient and correct decisions to be made during the building process. The “architect” in this metaphor is the person who has designed a model as a coherent plan to bring about certain types of learning and to achieve one or more program standards (such as the NASPE standards). That person develops the original blueprint that gives a model its defining characteristics and unique ways for teachers to instruct and students to learn. The “builder” in this metaphor is the teacher, who takes the blueprint (a model) and follows it to promote certain standards and other learning outcomes in physical education.
