ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case of Matt Wilson who had worked for Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.) for eight years. The considerations of many thorny issues–such as consideration on child labour, environmental protection, health and safety, and human rights–led LS&Co. to draw up and introduce Global Sourcing and Operating Guidelines in 1991, which were implemented the following year. These guidelines comprised two parts: the "Country Assessment Guidelines" and the "Business Partner Terms of Engagement" (TOE), which set specific standards for suppliers in areas such as: freedom of association; fair employment practices; workers' health and safety; and environmental management. Matt arranged a meeting with Rao, the regional advisor for South Asia, and the management team to address the suppliers' violations of ILO and TOE standards and to reach a decision on how best to deal with the situation. During the meeting, they discussed the situation in depth and identified the various stakeholders that would be affected by their decision.
