ABSTRACT

Health promotion content has been a major component in the Monash University medical curriculum since the early 1990s. Three descriptive examples of international models of health promotion across undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels address these questions: “How can medical educators best prepare their students to contribute to another century of continued health improvement?” “Are students learning about prevention currently?” A key educational strategy utilised in successful development and implementation of health promotion in medical education is the establishment of community partnerships with higher education. The Mount Sinai School of Medicine example in particular highlights the importance of such integration within its graduate medical programme. Health promotion in medical education also requires students to utilise effective communication, relationship-building, facilitation, negotiation and partnership skills in the provision of preventive services. The establishment of Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved programme adopted key strategies to alleviate physician shortages across the following categories: applicant pool, medical education and practice environment.
