[Ref-Links] Reference Linking Workshop #2, 6/9/99

Colleagues,

The second invitational workshop on reference linking will be held on June
9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westin Copley Place in Boston in conjunction
with the annual conference of the Society of Scholarly Publishers. All
members of this list are cordially invited to attend, BUT there are limited
number of 60 seats available in the workshop. We will be able to
accommodate all those who attended the first workshop in February.
Remaining seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If
you wish to attend, please notify Jane Thomson at the National Information
Standards Organization no later than next Thursday, May 13. You can reach
her by e-mail at jthomson@niso.org.

The agenda of the June workshop will focus on the report of the Reference
Linking Working Group, and issues arising from the report such as scenarios
for implementing standard reference linking systems, ways of dealing with
the so-called Harvard problem, and ways to shape an environment that can
accommodate a variety of reference linking models, including those that
depend on lookup databases as well as those that depend on "calculable"
identifiers. The Working Group met as scheduled on April 20 and has drafted
a report which is circulating among the group members and will be available
to the members of this list early next week, almost 3 weeks ahead of
schedule. The final agenda for the workshop will depend in large part on
the issues raised on this list in response to the Working Group report.

For those planning to attend the June workshop, NISO has reserved a block
of room at the The Westin Copley Place, 10 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA
02116 (phone 1-800-937-8461 or 617-267-6110; fax 617-267-8405). These
rooms will be held until May 15 at the group rate of $203 per night -- the
regular rate is $365! If you call for a reservation ask for the Scholarly
Publishing group rate.

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. I would be
especially pleased to hear your suggestions for the workshop. And be sure
to let Jane Thomson (jthomson@niso.org) know by May 13 if you plan to attend.

Best regards,

Don Waters
