[Metadata] SLinkS Framework 1.4
I've just put public draft #1.4 of "SLinkS, the Scholarly Link
Specification Framework" on my web site for public inspection. The URL is
http://www.openly.com/SLinkS/SLinkS.html
SLinkS has 2 components:
1. An XML based template language, with DTD, for constructing URL's and
DOi's from bibliographic data.
2. An RDF metadata vocabulary, with scheme, for expressing some things you
need to express for true cross-publisher linking.
Feedback is very much appreciated. Of particular interest to this list is
the RDF vocabulary. I have confined my attention to the nitty-gritty of
internet linking and have given scant attention to traditional
"bibliographic" metadata, hoping that other groups would pick up the ball
here.
RDF seems to be a very appropriate structure for DOI related metadata. If
you found the early drafts of the RDF spec to be impenetrable, as I did,
you'll find the latest drafts (which have reached "final call" status) to
be quite a bit more readable. http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-rdf-schema

Blurb:
The Scholarly Link Specification (SlinkS) Framework is designed to
facilitate direct inter-publisher internet reference linking. Although many
impressive implementations of reference linking into databases have been
made, a publisher wanting to link references directly to another publisher
has had to first work out a linking agreement, then work out a method to
interchange linking data, and finally have programmers implement the links.
SLinkS streamlines this process by providing a well-defined syntax and
vocabulary for the exchange of the necessary information. A publisher can
then implement reference linking for a large number of publishers using a
single software module.
Looking at it the other way, SLinkS gives publishers a way to publish link
method specifications.
Publishers can use the SLinkS framework to implement either private or
public linking exchanges.
Openly Informatics, Inc. has developed and is using the SLinkS
specification as a basis for software and services to serve the scholarly
publishing industry.
