[Metadata] Request for <terms and conditions> documents
An international working group - set up under EDItEUR with the
participation of the International DOI Foundation- is working out what
metadata (or information about information) is needed in order to enable
the DOI, and other similar identifiers, to be used in electronic commerce, in
ways that protect Intellectual Property Rights.
One of the working group?s projects is to devise a standard way in which
the ?terms and conditions?, which are customary in our industry, could be
expressed so that computer systems could understand them. This
would make it possible to have totally or partially automated systems to
deal with routine transactions. The project team hopes to have a pilot
demonstration ready for the Frankfurt Book Fair.
The group has worked out a theoretical framework to describe the kinds
of relationships, or ?agreements?, with which we are all familiar -
contracts with authors/editors/contributors, rights agreements,
permission grants, and licences (such as site licences) with customers.
However, it is important to check that this framework does in fact reflect
the way that we all do business. To do this, examples of typical
agreements are needed.
The International DOI Foundation would be extremely grateful if you would
be willing to supply some examples of typical contracts, agreements,
grants and licences, containing the kinds of payment arrangements which
you most commonly use. These will be used in the strictest confidence,
but you are of course free to remove the name both of the company and
of the other party, as this will not in any way impede the group?s analysis.
Please send these to me (Norman Paskin) by mid-August if at all
possible.
